They aren't necessary. If you want to make a long pasta but you don't think you have the time start it on Microsoft Word or Open Office (or whatever) and save that. If you start to add on to it as time goes by then... well... you get the point. Once it's all finished you can just copy and paste it when you start creating an article (which is what I do). If you start a pasta on the wiki and leave it blank either because you don't have the time or get bored with the project (which the latter is something I suspect in most of the cases), you have created a hastle that the wiki communtiy has to deal with. It's just common courtesy.

P.S. Note I didn't start with "Hello my many minions". That means it's serious.
