When you're writing a story (or anything else in particular), what sort of music is playing for you? For myself, I typically play most of my usual tracks. This includes rock genres, drum and bass, ambient, and the occasional rap/hip-hip. Most genres can I listen to and still write productively. A few heavy and chaotic genres (metal, dubstep, other heavy electronic) can be a bit distracting, but that still leaves a vast array of music for me.
I used to only write to music that fit the mood of the story, such as dark piano, dark ambient, and other similar atmospheres. Sometimes, I turn back to sounds of that sort, but I don't feel a "need" for it anymore.
Your feelings might be entirely different. You could be an individual who can't listen to anything while they write, in which case, don't feel shy about commenting/sharing. All perspectives are welcomed.
