If you can see them, keep reading.
If not, then this is a work of fiction to you, but for those of you who are immune, this is the best way to get the information out without sounding like a lunatic—or attracting their attention.
You already know what they look like. They look like normal people—any height, any weight, any race, any age. They wear normal clothes. What’s wrong is their face.
The mask. They wear a gas mask, and if you’re close, you can hear their laborious breathing, but don’t try to get too close.
Nobody else can see them but us. You’ve tried telling people, but they dismissed it as an imaginary friend when you were a child. Now, as an adult, they think you’re crazy.
You’re not. I see them too.
You wonder, what do they want? Why can’t anyone else see them? And why do they wear those strange gas masks?
Well, why does anyone wear a gas mask?
It’s the air. There’s something in the air they don’t want to breathe. There’s something in the air that we breathe and they don’t. And I think I know what it is.
It’s the thing that keeps others from seeing them.
This agent can make people not see them. It makes them dumb and docile.
But then, you ask yourself, how can I see them?
It’s because you’re immune, like me.
There are tons of immune people all over the world, looking for cures—for why these immunities exist. But the more pressing question is, what do these gas-masked freaks want?
If you’ve seen them, you know they aren’t hostile. They never hurt anyone. They just stand on a street corner, or are sitting in a building, or are walking with the flow of a crowd. But why?
They’re watching. I don’t know why, and I don’t know what they’re looking for, but they’re watching us.
If you are immune, take these words of advice: never approach them. They know you’re immune, because you look at them, but they’ll never approach you.
They’re studying you too.
For those of you who can’t see them, you’ll take this as a work of fiction, but be warned: they’re out there. You’ll call us crazy, but we’re right.
Have you ever walked into a room, and forgotten why you went in there? Have you ever experienced déjà vu? Have you ever stared off into space, and not known why?
It’s because you saw them. The agent failed, but just for a second. It replaced your memory of seeing them with empty space, and that’s why you feel these phenomenon.
For those of you who can see, never let your guard down. I’ve been seeing them for sixty-four years, but you never know what might happen, so just keep your head down, and try to ignore them.
Because they’re watching.
