Alright, let me start off by saying that this has nothing to do with the awesome TV show, Doctor Who. This is something worse. Something Scary. Something....Unknown.
These are the Daleks. To differentiate the pronunciation of these and the Daleks from Doctor Who, I pronounce them "Day-Leks" to keep the two apart when talking about them.
Lets start from the beginning. One day about 4 weeks ago I was walking home from a friends and passed this trash-can full of useless electronics and noticed a perfectly mint memory card for a Nintendo Gamecube that said, "Dalek. Keep contained."
I hesitated to pick it up because of its odd title. I took it home pondering whether i should use this memory card because of its warning to keep the "Dalek" contained.
There it was sitting on my desk for an hour now while it dug away at my curiosity until I eventually decided to try it out on my GameCube. I booted up the dusty old thing to look at the cards contents to notice what a chock full of games that I haven't even looked at in years. Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, and hell even Pikmin.
That's just scratching off the surface of what was in there. It got a little odd when I got down to the near bottom to what I thought was the last game and just barely noticed that there was one last arrow down. When I went down one more, my Gamecube without any delay shut off the second I went down another option as if I pressed the power button. I turned it back on three more times to see the same results. I got frustrated and decided to pop in my Super Mario Sunshine to see what this guy had saved. I should have just listened to the writing on the card.It started up as usual and played like any other normal retail game. There was only one file and its progress was at 24 stars. I assumed that the guy who played only played like once so I decided to finish it because its not like I had anything better to do on a Friday. I noticed something odd as I played on.
Every time I turned a corner I swore I saw two blue eyes cower into a building. Just eyes though, no body. Just two floating, ocean blue eyes. I didn't like it so I plugged in my pinnacle to record it.
Every time I did I got nothing on my computer's end. I just continued playing the game without questioning myself. I had just gotten to the part at the Hotel where you have to kill all the manta rays. I died out of nowhere, afterwards noticing that it wasn't out of nowhere. It was the blue eyes that jumped at Mario to kill him instantly.
I shot back out of the warp pipe, losing a life. Baffled at what just happened, I was oblivious to something even more weird. I walked around Delfino plaza to see those creepy blue eyes jumping at the others in town and the other people played the Mario death animation and faded out. This was just beyond hysterics now.
I reset my GameCube to find everything went back to normal. It was all just fine. I played for five more hours until I got 53 stars and decided to hop on another GameCube game. Whatever that "thing" was, was nowhere to be found. I said to myself it must've been the Dalek that the memory card warned me about. I shrugged and said, "Whatever."
Now it was time to relive my childhood on the GameCube. I popped in my Legend of Zelda Collectors Edition to play some Ocarina of Time.
Here we go. Link was riding on a horse. First thing I saw when I was 5. Very nostalgic now. Lets get started! I had a big smile on my face until I read the save file.
"Dalek." My smile quickly faded.
I looked at the save file to notice that this file was also incomplete. Like someone just played for a while and just stopped like something serious had happened to them within their progress. He had everything up to the Fire temple's medallion. Also only 4 and a half hearts left out of 6. Curiosity killed the cat. I just had to see where he was. It loaded for me to find him in the temple of time. Normal right?
No. Epona and Saria, who was sitting on her log playing her song, were in the Temple of Time with me. This was incredibly wrong because this never happened before on my game. EVER. I walked out of the temple and was warped to Hyrule castle right in front of a guard.
"Aw come on!" I would have laughed at the glitches of this game if they weren't so off.
I was thrown by the guard and instantaneously warped above a lava pool. And if you haven't caught the one most off thing about this then listen. I am the older Link who was warped to Hyrule castle in the daytime and the map was as if I were still young Link. Link died in the lava obviously and stupid me hit A when it asked to continue.
I was in Lost Woods where Saria on a log would be if I were young link right in front of the Forest Temple. Link's head looked up like I was talking to the owl. It zoomed in to the upper platform at the door of the temple. Those eyes. Those damn ocean blue eyes. Exactly the same from when I was playing Super Mario Sunshine.
My heart sank and I shuddered at the sight of him. The text box came up and he said, "You can't escape my sight."
I pressed A.
"Sight". Pressed A again.
"Sight". This time when I pressed A he jumped at me and Link died. Before it even asked to continue I slammed the power button as quick as I possibly could. I need to find out something. I decided to pop in another game. This game had the worst possible atmosphere for what I had wondered about these creepy blue eyes. Luigi's Mansion.
I had been thinking about using Luigi's Mansion over dinner but then it turns out that I couldn't find it. I said screw it and just went back into Super Mario Sunshine. It started but the moment I got to the file select Mario wasn't there. The two eyes were instead.
I shuddered again and moved him to select the file. When I selected the file, rather than giving me the progress it had a message. it said, "This time I will be the one who changes the atmosphere."
I felt a chill go down my back. My Gamecube restarted...On its own? This time it just jumped me right into the a level instead of even loading the intro or file select. Like I just walked into the room. Oddly enough I had no F.L.U.D.D on my back.
The room was like a big bright box's interior. Empty though. I walked and for a frame it was Mario looking a me in a red box with no eyes and blood pouring from his eye sockets. How can this be? I was too scared of what was coming to move on so I shut off the GameCube and decided to play some Minecraft. I just wanted some video game relief that night.
I couldn't sleep that Friday night. Too busy thinking about what a Dalek is. Is it a ghost? Demon? Hack? What horrible person could have created this? It only seems to show up on my GameCube. No matter what I played. I played Super Smash Brothers Melee in hope of relief. When I was planning to fight Mewtwo on his Level 9 difficulty all I got to fight were two blue eyes on a hellscape map. It was like a map with lava and screeching voices faintly heard and the lavender town theme from pokemon red and blue reversed.
I was shaking so bad when I heard it. I thought that lavender town wasn't even in Melee. Is it? It couldn't be. The characters name was Dalek. What did it want from me? It kept harassing me in all of my Gamecube games until I turned it off to play my Xbox 360 to talk to my friend Bill about this.
I talked with him about it and he got a little fearful that it would find its way to him. So we played some Halo Reach to relieve our stress. Firefight. On a map called Courtyard. It was normal as always, we were just killing some elites and he said he thought he saw a pair of
blue eyes kill an elite. I shivered. Now this was out of hand. How could it be here? I tried to deny it by telling him it was me who killed the elite. But it got worse. The sky changed into a crimson shade and the elites got disturbing. When we looked at their corpses they had their eyes dug out and blood pouring from the sockets. But it wasn't hyper realistic or anything. It looked like Halo Reach's graphics.
Bill said he was getting off so I ended the game and when my credits summary came up my spartan looked dead and decayed standing there. Still not looking hyper realistic. I nearly threw up at the sight of it because of the fear that consumed me as this Dalek haunted me. Instead of raising his DMR, where his eyes were they flashed blue. Just like the Dalek's eyes.
I couldn't take it anymore. I needed a big break from my consoles. But my curiosity just wouldn't let me go. So guess what? I continued.
I waited and waited in Courtyard soon after Bill went offline to find the Dalek again. Nothing. I felt cheated. And scared. It was time for a good night sleep. Hopefully. I went back on the Gamecube to see if the Dalek was on the memory card.
I scrolled down and the last game was Pikmin. Just like last time except there wasn't one more option down. My heart sank. The Dalek was not there. Was he gone? I took it as a sign of abandoning its intentions from me. I thought it was finally over. I went to bed with a smile on my face. I was so wrong.
It was Sunday. I was awake laying there thinking. Was the Dalek gone? I didn't care anymore. Since my friends wanted to play on my Minecraft server I got it up and running.
Four people got on immediately (not including myself). I let it run for a while, sitting back in my chair to relax. My phone rang. It was Lukas. He told me everybody kept getting killed by floating blue dots. When he said it I cringed at the thought of it. I started up Minecraft to get on the server just to see him. When I clicked connect a burst of static emitted out of my speakers really loud. The screen didn't say connecting and it didn't have a dirt background. It was black and it had white text saying:
Instantly I understood what it was thanking me for. I released him. The torment didn't end there though. My TV was on. And I never turned it on. It was the same text and background as the Minecraft window. My phone had it too. I opened up my Nintendo DS and it had the two screens doing the same window. I was shaking and very fearful. I heard something faint. It was lavender town. What was it with the Dalek and this song? It was like the song of unhealing. The Server loaded. But it wasn't my server. It was like a giant city. It was awesome too. Even though I was still shaking over the fact that it was on EVERY digital display in my room. I walked about two steps before using the list command. It worked. I'm an admin?
When the list came up it said, "Dalek Dalek Dalek Dalek Dalek Dalek Dalek Dalek Dalek Hylam (Me)".
This must've been what some of my steam friends call "Bot city". People say nobody ever knows about them because they are lost inside by....by...blue...eyes. I jumped and tried to turn everything off before I lost it. My TV wouldn't shut off. I grabbed a hammer to smash it in. Since it was analog and glass. Unplugging it didn't work so I smashed the screen in.
My Desktop wouldn't turn off so I broke the monitor as quick as I could. I cracked the screen of my iPhone so it couldn't display and pulled half of my laptop to stop the display. I was done. I was breathing really heavily and felt relieved...Until I remembered my DS. I opened it to break it and before I did I noticed a message. It said, "Thank you". On the bottom screen it said, "Come find us."
And right after I read it my DS shut off. I turned it on and instead of it going to the menu one more message appeared:
"You can have your life back until you find us." I did feel somewhat relieved. And scared of finding Daleks.
I thought back to how the one Dalek looked to me. He always looked edited into an animation when he moved. I pulled out my spare TV and Monitor that I had just in case I sold my old TV and Monitor. Laptop was going to break anyways so I just shrugged and said, "Whatever."
I pulled out the memory card and what I saw made me cringe again. It was blank. The writing was gone. When I turned on my Gamecube all of the data was gone. I finally lost the sense of embodiment when I played old Gamecube games. I asked myself one last question. Who are the Daleks?
