I graduated high school in the summer of 2004. Passing with flying colors, I decided to accept a scholarship to Oklahoma State. Leaving the noisy New York City to go to a quiet little city was going to be a difficult change for me, being 19 and fresh out of high school. But things were not only going to be difficult, they were about to become completely and utterly disturbing. It all began when I met Stephan.
First of all, I decided to stay in a dorm at the university. I could afford it due to the scholarship money that I had won. I shared my dorm with a guy named Trent. He came all the way from Sacramento to attend school at Oklahoma State. Everything was great for a couple of months until Trent had to leave school due to a “family emergency." I never heard from him again.
It was about a week or two until my new roommate arrived; Stephan. He was a strange guy from the beginning being 4’6 and from Russia. He had short black hair and bloodshot eyes. He never said one word to me. Not even one comment. Sometimes he would just stare at me while I was on my computer or watching T.V.
I, assuming he was new to the country and didn’t know any English, thought he was just looking for a route to communication. “Stephan, want to watch anything on T.V?” I would ask, definitely freaked out. He would just continue to stare with wide eyes. I filed for a new roommate after the second week of this. I could not enjoy my stay at the university with him as my roommate. I went to sleep that night at 11:00 P.M. I dreamt the most horrific dream… GOD. Stephan was staring at me as usual, with an awful grin. But this was a lot more sinister… his eyes were pitch black. Blood was pouring out of every hole on his face. He began to stick each one of his fingers into his mouth, and then bit them off. He stuck two fingers into his ears, and then straight into his eyes.
“WATCH!” he proceeded to scream this louder, and louder, and LOUDER AND OH GOD SO LOUD. I woke up with a start, sweat dripping down my forehead. I glanced over to Stephan’s bed. He was not there. I looked at my alarm clock; it was 2:46 in the morning. The only light in the room was coming from my laptop, which I decided to go on to forget about that terrible dream about Stephan.
There was a new .pdf file on my laptop that wasn’t there before. It was simply titled “WHY." I looked at the date it was made:
November 3, 2004 2:39 A.M
I knew it had to be Stephan. The video was about 6 minutes long. I began to play the video. For about 30 seconds, it was pitch black. All I could hear was the sound of heavy breathing. Then a fire was lit, coming from a match in a hand. Stephan’s face came into view, with a rope around his neck. He moved the camera so that it was recording me sleeping. This went on for about 2 minutes with the sound of Stephan’s silent laughter mixed with a form of dreadful sobbing. Stephan turned the camera back to face him.
He slowly raised the match. I screamed at the computer. I knew what Stephan was doing. He set his scalp on fire and began to sob. He began to slam his head down onto the metal table until the fire was out. His head was a sickly blackish red color with bits of hair still falling out.
I began to tear up, disturbed greatly. Why was he doing this? WHY WAS HE SHOWING ME? Stephan stood up on a chair and hung himself. I turned around towards the doorway and realized that this was where this occurred. I immediately called the police and the video was brought in as evidence of Stephan’s apparent suicide. The scariest part of this story is that this same type of suicide (recorded, self-harm with fire, hanging), has occurred in 12 different residences throughout the world. All were entitled WHY.pdf, and all witnesses of such videos reported the same type of nightmare that I had reported having. I have dropped out of college and am now severely depressed. I am seeing a therapist. Stephan is survived by his mother and father in Kazakhstan.
