I am a huge Halo fan, and I own every Halo game from Combat Evolved to Halo 4. I play Halo 4 a lot and got to thinking about how much I missed the Custom Games on Halo 3. So I took out my Halo 3 Disc and plopped it into my 360. I have had my Halo 3 game since it came out and I played it a lot. The game started up and I seen my Gold and Blue Elite, and I decided to make a map on Sandtrap. I started up Sandtrap and turned into Oracle mode and started flying around the map trying to make a Infection map.I started around the map when I heard a weird noise coming from behind me, right in front of the crashed Phantom ship.
I turned back into Player mode and walked over to see if I could hear it any better. The noise was the sound of a Spartan Laser charging, but it was extended to where it was high pitched, you know like 2 seconds away from blasting. It kept going and there was no Spartan Laser anywhere, and I was the only one in the game, considering I had put it on "Invite Only" at the start of the game, and none of my friends were playing Halo 3. I thought it was just some glitch and forgot about it. I was walking through the map, just screwing around, placing Warthogs, flipping the Elephant to see the secret message. I walked along and I eventually went back to the Phantom Area, and the noise was still going.
Once again, I ignored it. I started walking down between the two buildings in the center of the map, when what seemed like a Spartan Laser shot right next to my head and ended up hitting the Hill on the opposite side. "HOLY SHIT!" I yelled as I turned around to see who was screwing with me. But there was nobody, and the Laser had came from right behind me, where the Phantom was. "That's weird" I said as I walked over towards the crashed Phantom. I plugged in my mic. "Alright, real funny assholes, I am trying to make a map here, don't screw it up." Silence, all there was, was silence, nothing but the wind blowing through-out Sandtrap. I ignored it once again and took the next few minutes to make another Infection map. I was well into the game for about maybe 15 minutes when the phone started to ring.
"Hello?" It was my mom, she called to tell me that she was working late tonight so she wouldn't get home till about 11. I told her that was alright and that I would call her when my little brother got home from School. I told her bye and I headed back to the my room to continue my map. When I got back.......everything was gone. I was pissed, 20 minutes into this map and everything was gone. The spawn points, the vehicles, the weapons, and even the damn Elephants were gone too. I was angry and I took another 15 minutes to put everything back until I seen something. My Funds were stuck, but that wasn't the creepy part. The creepy part was, my funds were $666. It wouldn't change, no matter how much I sat down stuff, and deleted them, the funds would not change. "What the hell? Is Bungie screwing with me?"
That's what I thought at first, little did I know, I was very mistaken. As i stopped to think about what was going on, in the corner of my screen, I seen a black blur, run across the map on the opposite side of the two main structures. I mean this thing was quick, in and out of my view for about maybe 2 seconds. I looked over and slowly walked down into dark structure to my right to maybe cut off whoever this little troll thought he was. I walked in and the doors to the outside on the other side had been blocked.
I tried the way i came in, but that was blocked too. I used Oracle mode to push or delete the objects in the path but nothing happened. I looked to the ground and threw my grenades at the ground to kill myself. I was successful and spawned outside the building. I walked around the corner to see what was blocking it. It wasn't an object, really I had no idea what it was. It looked like a big black mass blocking the door. I shot at it and it moved. It waved back in forth like shimmers of water when a rock was thrown into a pond. It shook after each bullet. "What the hell is this?" I hit the melee button, and when I made contact, my weapon had vanished.
Like it just vaporized in this thing. When that happened I jumped back. I seen something moving with in it. I moved forward, looking at it. Suddenly, a face popped out and stuck to my screen with a loud scream. The scream ended but the face didn't go away. It stayed there, but that face. That face! It had pitch black eyes with yellow pupils. With what seemed to be a black liquid coming out of it's eyes. The mouth was wide, and opened to a bowling ball sized hole, with shark like teeth with what appeared to be blood-stained. The face was round and a rotten flesh colored brown. I freaked out and turned off the Xbox. After an hour or so, I turned it back on. This time, going to Theater Mode. I opened up my recent games, and opened the video.
I watched it, and to my surprise, there was nothing. No black substance, no face, the only thing that I did see was the Spartan Laser that nearly took my Elite's head off. I fast forwarded to the part where the face had popped up. Like earlier, it wasn't there. But my Elite was acting weird. It started to do the animation in Campaign when a Flood Parasite was trying to get into it's chest. It swung it's arms rapidly, it seemed to try to get something off of it. Then it screamed "No! No! No! Get it out of me!" and "It's in my head!" Then he fell to the ground, with it's hand in the air, then it lowered to the ground with a thump into the sand. The only thing I could hear was the sound of wind in Sandtrap.
After that I flew around the map in Spectator Mode to see if I could find anything else out of line. I did, and it made my blood run cold, there, over in the Guardians, was everything I had placed before that went missing. Right in front of one of the towers that surrounded the map. I decided to put this on HaloWaypoint.com. 2 days after it was uploaded, it was deleted. I got a message in every inbox I had. Xbox, Facebook, Youtube, Halo Waypoint, and my email. They all read the same thing, it said "Death is my Salvation. I wanted to be a part." The sender of this email was named the same name. Blackout. A picture was added to the message in my inbox for my email. It was a picture of my Elite, as a limbless corpse, and lying in a pool of purple blood. With a Black Spartan, wearing CQB armor. But the weirdest thing was that this Spartan, only had one arm, and the place where the arm was supposed to be, was a see-through hole, to where I could see the back of Sandtrap through the hole.
I zoomed on the picture, and seen that a part of the helmet had a hole in its visor, and a black eye, with a yellow pupil. I soon heard a rumor that Bungie had used models of random Spartans to test colors and graphics on Sandtrap. They made a Black one, but Bungie said Black was not to be used in Multiplayer only on special game modes, so they deleted the model of the black spartan. The rumor said that it was found by someone who sneaked into Bungie Headquarters and decided to take it and use it as a bot. The file was corrupted, but the guy put in on a disk anyways and took it home.
The guy put it on Sandtrap and then gave it an A.I. to act like the bots in Campaign. Something happened to the guy and he was never seen again. His home was empty, everything was gone except a note that said "Death was his Salvation. He wanted to be a part, so he made me suffer, just as he did. Forgotten in darkness, and never to see light again." The Spartan was a hacked model that a guy took, gave an A.I. but it didn't work. Blackout is the name of this thing that is haunting Sandtrap. He is not gone, and I don't think he will never leave, the guy who took the model, uploaded it into the script of Sandtrap. And will never be deleted. Have you ever felt uncomfortable doing something you love?
Every time I go into Sandtrap, I can feel it watching me the other day and I wouldn't stand for it anymore! I seen it, that Black Spartan just appeared in front of me, walking closer towards me, at a slow pace. It looked as if I was nothing more than another one of it's victims. No! I wasn't go to stand for this, I turned around and jumped into a Warthog that was right behind me and I floored it. Going as fast as I could making my Elite drive towards that abomination that was now haunting me. I was 5 ft from when I hit it. As I did, the game began to lag heavily. I couldn't even move that it was so bad. Some how I was able to turn around to see that, it was still just standing there, but it was floating. It was all twisted, the arms and legs were bent out of shape.
And it just sat there, floating in mid air. After 15 seconds of doing nothing but staring at it, I realized I couldn't move. I tried to walk, but my Elite wouldn't even move his legs. My camera froze but the game didn't because I could still hear the wind. Plus the Spartan was still floating and moving. Suddenly it moved it's head towards me with a loud "Crack" as it popped it's neck back into place. The limbs were slowly cracking back together. Suddenly in a flash, the thing fell on the ground, and started to spider crawl it's way towards me as fast as it could. I tried shooting at it, and it just kept dodging to the left and right.
My Assault Rifle flashing as I held in the trigger and this thing kept dodging. It got 10 ft in front of me when it leaped at me. I hit the melee button as hard and as fast as I could press it. I punched it in the helmet, and it still pounced on me, but that hit knocked the helmet off. There it was, face and all, looking at my camera I got a full view of this thing. Black eyes, yellow pupils, a mouth that was shaped into a evil grin with sharp teeth.
It's flesh was rotted and missing pieces from its cheek and jaw. The graphics on this thing was out of actual Halo graphics. It looked as if you could touch it's teeth and feel it's decaying flesh. It lifted it's head towards the sky and then back down to me. I could still move my camera also, and I looked to my left and right to see it's hands holding me to the ground. I looked back at it.
It opened it's mouth wide and lunged at my screen. My screen was covered in a black and purple checkered screen for about 10 seconds. Then it went to black, then there was a text that popped on the screen in a red color. It said "You probably shouldn't have done that." My screen flashed with pictures of butchered corpses, and mangled faces. Some were of people that were gutted, some had eyes ripped straight from their sockets. Shocked, I quickly turned off my system, and laid in bed. Wondering what just happened. I tried to get some sleep that night. I wonder if I could ever play Halo 3 ever again.
Somehow I was able to actually put the game in the next morning. I wanted answers, and I was going to get them. I decided I wasn't going in alone, so I asked a friend, Chris, to come with me. He said he would and we made a party. When we started, my Elite and his Spartan spawned in the map, same way as I left it as before. "So" he said. "What exactly did you bring me here in the first place for?" I tried to come up for a reasonable answer without sounding crazy. "I just want to see if this, uhhhh, glitch works. If it does, I need your help to get rid of it." He went along with it luckily. We went up on the highest hill in Sandtrap and waited for something to happen. "Dude, we have been standing here for maybe 5 minutes doing nothing but watching the map, what the hell are we looking f...." His sentence trailed off. I looked over at his Spartan to see that he was looking off at something in the distance.
"Did you invite someone to your game?" he asked. I made my Elite shake his head, then I looked where he was. Sure enough, there was a Black Spartan, standing on the other side of the map, just looking straight at us. We both went to game chat. "Hey! Who are you?" my friend called out. "This is what I wanted to show you, this guy has been in all of my games since the past 3 weeks and he won't leave me alone, and a lot of weird shit has been happening. I fear he might be a hacker of some sort" I lied to my friend, if I told him the truth, he probably would have left me here or something. In a second, my screen was covered in static. Chris started screaming, and I just seen his Spartan fall to the ground next to me. I couldn't here him anymore, and his body just laid there. He didn't leave the game, but I could no longer hear him.
I tried to look over and find the Spartan, but he was gone. I decided to get out of the game and called my friend to ask what happened. His mom answered the phone, crying. I asked where Chris was and there was a silence for about maybe 10 seconds. Then she replied "In the hospital." I didn't reply, I sat there. "He had a heart attack. They told us he won't make it." I apologized to her and said good-bye. I sat there and thought of what that thing could have done to him for such a thing to happen. I turned ghost white, and began to sweat. To break me out of the confusion and fear, the phone rang. I walked out of the room and answered it. "Hello?" I said. I heard breathing for maybe 30 seconds, then a voice. "Death is my salvation. I wanted to be a part." The voice sound as it had multiple tones behind, one deeper than the other. "What the hell do you want from me?" I asked. "To be a part" it said. I then heard the same scream that Chris did, just before he had the heart attack.
At this time I was alone in the house. I tried to find the courage to say something else, but I couldn't swallow the fear. The power then went out. Pitch black in my house and it was 12 in the morning. "What the hell? Why is it so dark?" I looked out my window, and seen nothing but black. I couldn't even see where I was anymore. I opened the back door and tried to go outside, but when I did, there in my door, was a black mass, that fit the door frame perfectly. "No, this can't be right, this can't be! This is a dream, nothing but a dream!" I sat on the ground, holding my head, engulfed in fear. Out of the corner of my eye, I seen a flickering light, coming from my room. I stopped and looked at it, I started to hear creaking coming from my room.
I then seen a black hand come out from my room on the floor. It's him, Blackout came for me, just like he did Chris. He came out spider crawling. Just as I seen him in the game, Spartan body, but decaying face and black eyes. He slowly crawled over to me, snapping of bone every time he moved. I kept backing up until I hit a dead end. As it got in my face it was upside down, then he twisted his head around till it was right side up, you could hear the spinal cord snapping as his head twisted. He twisted his mouth into a painfully wide grin. I said. "Wha... What do you want?" He never blinked, not once. He just stood there, staring into my eyes, mine staring at his. "My salvation. My part in this world." He said slowly. He opened his mouth and lunged at me. I flinched, and stopped, opening my eyes. In the darkness I seen 2 yellow dots slowly creeping back into my room, but still facing me. I heard a insane laughter coming from that direction. "Death is my salvation, I can never die."
After the next 30 minutes of sitting there, I fell asleep on the floor. My mom came into the door waking from my sleep and asking why was I so pale. I slowly looked up at her and said "Death is his salvation. He wanted to be a part, so he made me suffer. Just as he did. Trapped in darkness, never to see the light again."
Two years is a long time to isolate yourself from society and those you love. Two years ago, I met with a monster that completely destroyed my mind. Its name was Blackout. The Ghost of Halo that has been haunting me all this time. I see him everywhere now and he has yet to leave me be. My life was just fine before I downloaded that map that was custom made by someone holding the monster in its script. I never touched my Xbox since that final day of my encounter. I hear his voice in my head and see his face in the dark corners of my room.
I kept telling myself he isn’t really there but it never works. I see his eye piercing through the blackness, stalking me as I sleep. My parents were so worried about me and tried to get me help but I refused multiple times. I have become a darker and bitterer version of myself. No friends, no family, no social contact in the matter. I flew into a rage one day, screaming at the top of my lungs and cursing everyone and everything for no exact reason. No one was home of course, but I could feel him watching me, looking into my soul as I completely broke down. I could almost hear his voice in my head saying “Your insanity, oh how it shines like a beacon”.
I reached underneath my bed and grabbed Halo 3. The case was covered in dust and had been one of many items I tossed under there after that fateful night. There was only one way I could get him out of my head; and that was to find out what the hell its intentions are and why me, of all people, would it choose to haunt, to destroy my life. I have said it once before. I saw him everywhere. A couple days after the incident with it, me and my girlfriend, Claire, broke up. We told me I wasn’t acting right, and that I needed help. I argued with her, and it ended. Right in front of a crowded hallway at school, our relationship busted into pieces. Why am I telling you this? She turned to walk away from me, and I seen something that I can’t get out of my head. It was escorting her down the hall. Its arm was around her shoulder leading her down the hall. Its head spun all around to where it faced me, grinning widely at me.
I flew into a rage, ramming my fist into a locker and proceeding to head butt it until my forehead began to bleed. It took 3 teachers to take me down. I thought about this as I looked down at Halo 3. I turned on my Xbox and had to wait for an update. Why didn’t I just quit? Why didn’t I just give the game away? It’s because it wouldn’t have changed a damned thing. It was already in my head, toying with me and making me see illusions, and completely destroying me from the inside out. The tray slid in, holding Halo 3. The dashboard was no longer nightmarish but it had the most recent update to it. I sat on the bed, waiting for the game to load to the main menu. When it loaded I opened up the armory menu. My Elite was wearing his yellow and blue Commando armor.
I selected the map with the strange lettering. The black screen faded in with the normal loading icon and the scoreboard. It was just me, in forge mode, waiting to see that abomination to rise in front of me. I spawned Plasma grenades along with a Beam rifle and Energy Sword. Not only all of those, I had a Flamethrower and a Missile Pod behind me. I was going to fight this time. Off in the far distance I saw a black figure run from my view and behind the structure at the far end of the map. I jumped inside Chopper and headed in that direction. As I rounded the corner the screen flashed with his face on my screen. It startled me to where I sort of screamed. Finally I got around the corner and the screen stopped flashing and my Chopper hit a landmine. It exploded but I somehow survived; shields low.
Did it really just use a landmine like an actual player? This bot is pretty smart, or is there more behind him then I expected. I turned and pulled my Beam Rifle out. It was walking towards me slowly, like a Flood Combat Form type of walk. A voice came out from my speakers. I plugged in my mic and listened. “Two years is a long time to keep someone waiting” the voice said in a dark tone. The voice that haunted for so long was real once again. I fired the Beam Rifle at him and the bullet just hit and did nothing. I couldn’t move once again. I mashed buttons once more as he slowly crept towards me. He was wearing them same armor, CQB with a pitch black to it, and that little crack in the visor to where its eye could be seen.
Finally I could move and I turned into Oracle mode and flew off in the distance. I turned back to player mode and turned. I was face to face with him. He hit me with a melee. His arm was missing with the same see through hole where the shoulder should be. My shields dropped like I was hit by a normal player. I ran backwards firing by beam rifle at him. One bullet hit him but when it did, the game lagged, and he got closer. A high pitched screech filled my ear with pain from my mic. It caught me off guard as it began to run at me, using the flood run animation. He jumped in the air at me. I needed to time it right. I pressed the X button as he was only a few feet from me. I tossed a flare and switched to Oracle mode and flew out of his range. It stood there, waiting for the flash to end. “Hey asshole, up here! I screamed. The flare disappeared and the creature looked straight up. I dropped a Scorpion Tank on his ugly ass. The tank dropped to the ground with a crashing noise and then, my Oracle exploded. “You have committed suicide” popped up on the bottom of the screen.
“What the hell was that?!” I screamed. The screen went black and flashed of images of faces of Flood infected forms, dead Elites and Spartans. Something very disturbing popped up on the screen next. It was me, sitting on the edge of my bed with the mic on, and a controller in my hand in the middle of my room. I began to breathe heavily and began gasping for air. I had a camera attached to my Xbox so I could video chat with friends. I looked up at the camera. Instead of the normal green light, it was flashing red and purple. It wasn’t a picture, it was me. If I moved in real life, I moved on screen. I began to feel dizzy and I felt sick to my stomach. Over in the corner of my room, stood a black silhouette. I looked back and it wasn’t there. When I looked back, it stood beside me. Its head was twitching its head rapidly staring at me. Goose bumps ran up and down my body. I wanted to scream but knew it wouldn’t do any good. His arm was the same as it was in game. In the camera I could see though the hole and see the corner of my room.
It raised its arm into the air over my head. I watched in horror as he twitched and spun his head in inhuman ways. As he touched my head, I head ache hit me so bad, it brought me to my knees. “Make it stop! Get it out of me! It’s in my head!” I screamed. I dropped to the ground and closed my eyes. I opened my eyes and I was in a dark room, and it was so cold. The room had nothing in it and the room was made of brick. There was a hallway extending in front of me descending down deeper into the darkness. I looked down at my hands. “What the hell?!” I said. “This isn’t right! This isn’t right at all!” I said to myself out loud. I had the hands of an Elite. I felt the skin of my arms and they were rough to the touch. My armor was Commando. My guess was that I had actually became my character from the game itself. In my vision almost like my face was against the screen, a message popped in my face. “Hold Down on D-Pad to activate flashlight”. I didn’t have a controller and I couldn’t walk. My flashlight clicked on only when I thought about it. As soon as I thought about the flashlight turning on, it turned on. I tried walking but I was stuck. Then I thought about moving, and my Elite body took a step forward. I thought again, and he stepped again.
Suddenly I was moving down the stair case descending into the darkness with nothing but a mounted flashlight on my shoulder. I descended down to where the floor turned into a long hallway. I walked down the bricked hallway until I nearly dripped over something. I regained my balance and turned to see what I had tripped over; a body of a Spartan. It seemed so familiar and the longer I looked at it, the more I could recognize it. Chris. It was Chris’s Spartan and it was lying dead against the wall. “What the hell is this?” I said allowed. Down the hall, footsteps came walking towards me. I was freaking out and was looking for a place to hide. Beside me was a room that was empty but had a small hole in the wall that you could look into the hall. I ran into the room and looked in through the hole, that was directly in front of Chris’s Spartan’s corpse. A Spartan walked in front of him. It wasn’t that Blackout thing either. I have never seen this Spartan before. “It looks like he got another one.
This one passed away two years ago.” He said to himself. I never heard the voice before either. He turned to face the hole I was staring through. I leaned against the wall out of the site of the Spartans flashlight. He turned around and faced the body again. “I know your hiding in there, show yourself.” He said. I slowly got up from my sitting position and walked out from the room in front of the Spartan. The Spartan was wearing Recon armor. His colors were purple and steel. “Another survivor. I was hoping my creation wouldn’t get anyone else.” He said. It hit me. “You’re the man that went missing. The ex- Bungie Employee that created that creature.” I said. “Keep your voice down. Do you want him to find us?” he said in a shushed yet aggressive voice. “But you are correct.” He finished. “What happened to me and where am I?” I asked. You are in a coma, fighting death itself and you are on your way to the hospital right now. When people fall into a coma, they go into a world that they have to fight either their worst fears, or sometimes death itself. The creature represents both. This is his world, his hunting ground.” He said.
I turned to face Chris’s body. “He was my friend who was killed by it. Did he come here too?” I asked. “Yes he did. From the look of things, he didn’t last too long. If he kills you in here, he kills you in real life. You have taken the form of your character because that’s how it pictures you.” He said. “I never wanted to create something that could do this to people. I wanted to create bots so people could play by themselves. As you can clearly see, it didn’t turn out the way I wished it had.” He said. “Are you stuck here to?” I asked. He waved his hand from me to follow him. “My body is under ground and I am nothing more than a memory of the creature. I don’t stay here very long. I just tell you how to survive and hope you can escape. It roams these halls searching for you, and it will not quit until it finds you, and kills you.” He said. “Can I kill it?” I asked. He stared at me, and shook his head. “You can’t kill something, that never existed in the first place.” He said. “When you hear him coming, hide. Make sure he does not find you.” He told me. As he finished his sentence, footsteps could be heard from behind me. Along with the sound of footsteps, the sound of bones cracking sounded with it.
I turned to face the Spartan for advice to where to go, but he was gone. I was alone and the next thing I could think of was to find some kind of hiding place. I ran into a room and his against the blackness on looking holes into the hall. The footsteps got closer and louder. I saw the shadow of a broken figure limping in front of the hole, breathing heavily. I sat there holding my breath, waiting for the creature to pass. A ringing noise echoed through my head as he got closer to hole. His eye was scanning the room. The eyes I shot two years ago had been shut. He quickly turned and continued down the hall. I waited till I could no longer hear his footsteps and walked out of the room, watching the direction where he went. It was dark and I couldn’t see a things. I walked down the opposite direction where he had originally come from. I walked for a couple seconds when I heard a noise from behind me. I turned to see nothing but a pitch black hall. Something caught my eye however. I looked to see it, crawling on the ceiling with his head completely upside down. I turned around and ran in the direction I was heading earlier. The creature dropped to the ground and began crawling behind me at an unbelievable speed.
As I rounded the corner, I saw a light at the end of the hall. I ran for my life and I could hear it behind me. I ran and ran, not turning back for a second. I ran for the light and was only inches from it, when I hand grabbed me from behind me. I dove for the light and awoke in the hospital bed. My mom ran over to me. “Oh my God! I thought I lost you.” She said. I was breathing heavily, gasping for air. After I left the hospital, we headed straight for home. I lied down in my bed trying to get some rest when my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID, fearing the worst. Luckily it was my friend. “Hey did you hear about the ghost that was found on Halo 4?” He said. “W…..What?” I asked. “Yeah man, black Spartan with only one arm has been joining people matches and stuff.” Another call came in. I switched over. “Hello?” I said. A voice that haunted my nightmares for so long, spoke to me once again. “I will be waiting for you.”
